Turbocharger or Supercharger – What’s the difference?
Superchargers and turbochargers force additional air into the engine to increase performance. The differences between turbochargers and superchargers lie within the method they use to do the job.
A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas pressure as the engine runs, whereas a supercharger is driven by the engines internal rotating assembly via a belt. It is well-known throughout the performance community that any load added to the engines rotating assembly (ie: alternator, power steering pump, etc.) will reduce horsepower. This means that the supercharger will have to overcome a loss in performance before any gains are realized. A turbocharger does not add any load to the engine, which means all performance increases will be realized 100%.
Superchargers may reduce some of the horsepower but add so much more on top of it that all you will know is a monument of horsepower under your hood. One of the major advantages to superchargers over turbos is that they do not have turbo lag. Turbo lag is caused by the time a turbocharger needs to spool up correctly from the exhaust pushing the turbine. This can me a lag off the line.
